First African languages bilingual dictionaries for young learners

Almost three-quarters of South Africa’s emergent literacy learners cannot read for meaning in their home language by the end of Grade 3. The main reason being that these young learners have weak language skills and lack sufficient vocabulary and grammar knowledge to make sense of what they are reading. Education being primarily in English – a 2nd or even 3rd language to most – is a big contributing factor. Becoming actively and critically literate calls for more than “rote repetition” and this is why resources such as the Oxford African languages bilingual dictionaries are so important.

learning an african language where to start

The Oxford African languages bilingual dictionaries are made especially for kids up to Grade 4!

These dictionaries are like none we’ve ever seen. Filled with pages of colourful, richly illustrated relatable themes aimed at grabbing the attention of little eyes. My body, clothes, colours, numbers, food, animals, my family, growing things, the weather, simple greetings and farewells are just a few of the popular topics used to introduce new words and also to “recycle” vocabulary and language structure in a meaningful context.

Learning is further enriched (and made fun) with fun activities and puzzles to solve. Read-aloud stories to enjoy, reference pages, pronunciation guides and lovable characters to get conversations started. Kids will see themselves in these illustrations. All races and even learners with special needs are included.

Other helpful features include:
  • Themes link with the CAPS curriculum for Foundation Phase (Just for the teachers that might be reading this).
  • Basic high-frequency words needed to get kids talking are highlighted.
  • Phrases and example sentences show learners how to use new words in context.
  • A bilingual glossary and index page helps with ease of use while also growing vocabulary and supporting understanding. It also teaches little ones how to use a dictionary.
