Almost three-quarters of South Africa’s emergent literacy learners cannot read for meaning in their home language by the end of Grade 3. The main reason being that these young learners have weak language skills and lack sufficient vocabulary and grammar knowledge to make sense of what they are reading. Education being primarily in English – a 2nd or even 3rd language to most – is a big contributing factor.
